This guide is for households using AT&T Fiber. Start with the setup path: gateway/router mode, bridge or AP mode, wiring/backhaul constraints, and whether mesh is even the right fix. Product picks come after those decisions.
ISP setup checklist
AT&T Fiber note: The two biggest wins are (1) avoiding double-NAT and (2) getting the Wi‑Fi source out of the corner via placement or backhaul.
What to do first:
Most AT&T Fiber homes keep the AT&T gateway in the network. The usual clean choices are IP Passthrough with mesh as the router, or mesh in AP mode while the gateway keeps routing. IP Passthrough gives your mesh more control; AP mode is simpler and avoids fighting gateway requirements.
If smart-home discovery, VPN, or gaming rules get strange, check for double-NAT first. With fiber, raw speed is often fine; the pain usually comes from routing confusion or poor Wi‑Fi placement.
The fiber path terminates at an ONT or gateway/ONT combo, then your home network leaves over Ethernet. If the gateway is in a closet, run Ethernet from the gateway to a better main-mesh location if possible. MoCA can still work over in-home coax, but it is separate from the fiber service; you usually use two adapters unless existing equipment provides a usable MoCA LAN.
